STCW Elementary First Aid Course (EFA)
This course forms part of the mandatory Basic Safety Training (BST) Course, however can also be undertaken on its own.
Description
During the theory and practical course, delegates will understand what to do in case of an accident or medical emergency on board a vessel, and how to apply elementary first aid techniques.
The course will cover:
- Dealing with an accident/emergency onboard
- Administering first aid
- CPR
- Dealing with shock
- Wounds & bleeding
- Burns & scalds
- Positioning a casualty
- Rescue & transportation techniques
The course will include videos, group discussions, sling application, physical demonstration of choking assistance, CPR, recovery position and simulated scenarios. Delegates will utilise simulation training aids and dummy equipment as well as real first aid supplies.

Certification
Delegates will be required to complete a short exam and practical exercises in order to be issued with an MCA approved STCW Elementary First Aid; Regulation VI/1, paragraph 1 and section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.3 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended.
Prerequisites
- Be at least 16 years of age.

This course does require physical work that is carried out on the floor so anyone with injuries that prevent them from doing so will be unable to complete the course and will have to re-book once they are fit and well.
