Description
Taught by our experienced trainers, this 3-day course is to enable designated personnel to take up the role of Safety Officer on board ship, as identified in the Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations 1997 (SI 1997 No. 2962)(The regulations), which define a safety officer as “a person who has sufficient training and experience of knowledge and/or qualifies, to enable him/her to properly undertake the duty imposed under the relevant provision in the regulations”.
Objectives
- The learner understands what is involved in carrying out the role of a ship’s safety officer
- The learner knows how to carry out risk assessment and accident reporting
- The learner knows how to carry out safety audit inspections
- The learner knows how to create a safety culture aboard ship through teamwork and raising awareness
The course will include trainer led presentations and videos.
Prerequisites
Learners shall be a minimum of 18 years and have at least 12 months sea time, plus will have served at sea on a merchant vessel and have in addition a minimum of two years’ consecutive sea service attaining the age of 18.
In the case of a safety officers on board a tanker, this shall include at least six months’ service in such a ship.
Certification
Delegates will be required to participate throughout the training and will be actively encouraged to interact with fellow delegates and the course trainer.
On the last day there will be a short question paper where the pass mark is 70%. Resits are permitted.
Upon successful completion you will be issued with the Shipboard Safety Officer Certificate.
