    Description

    This package includes updating Personal Survival Techniques (PST) and updating Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FPFF) and updating Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (PSCRB) together in one at a reduced cost. 

     

    Certification

    Delegates will be required to successfully complete the practical exercises in order to be issued with an MCA approved STCW Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques certificate; Regulation VI/1, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 3 and 4.1 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978 as amended, as well an MCA approved STCW Updating Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting certificate, and an MCA approved STCW Updated Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (Other than Fast Rescue Boats); Regulation VI/2, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/2, paragraph 5 & 6 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978 as amended.

    Overview

    UPST:

    It has been agreed that some of the required updated training may be carried out onboard ships, with certain elements that have to be undertaken at an MCA approved training centre. The following training and experience that can be undertaken onboard is as follows:

    • Don a lifejacket
    • Board a survival craft from the ship while wearing a lifejacket
    • Take initial actions on boarding a lifeboat to enhance chance of survival
    • Stream a drogue or sea anchor
    • Operate survival craft equipment
    • Operate location devices, including radio equipment

    By complete the above training onboard and by signing the self declaration to confirm, this will permit you to meet the prerequisites of the half-day course.

    During the practical you will be required to do the following:

    • Correctly don and use an immersion suit
    • Jump from a height into the water 
    • Swim while wearing a life jacket
    • Right an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket
    • Keep afloat without a life jacket
    • Board a survival craft from the water while wearing a life jacket unassisted

    UFPFF:

    The course will include both theory and practical elements.

    Practical session will include:

    • - Initial actions to take upon discovering a fire
    • - Correctly use portable fire extinguishers on appropriate fire types
    • - Correctly and safely use a fire blanket including its use for PPE
    • - Correctly use hoses, nozzles and hose equipment
    • - Hot live fire wear in full PPE and SCBA (18kg)
    • - Casualty rescue techniques (35kg)
    • - Evacuation techniques in reduced visibility
    • - Use of stairs and ladders in full PPE and SCBA (18kg) in hot/smoky environment 

     UPSCRB:

    This course will include theory and practical "on the water" sessions and will cover the following:

    • - Identify the dangers associated with "off-load" and "on-load" release devices
    • - Demonstrate correct operation of "off-load" and "on-load" release devices
    • - Identify and explain the correct operation of Fall Prevention/Secondary Safety Devices or their equivalent
    • - Safely operate a survival craft engine
    • - Taking charge of launching and boarding survival craft
    • - Safely manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship
    • - Rig and use locating devices including communication and signalling apparatus and pyrotechnics
    • - Apply first aid to survivors, including demonstration of resuscitation techniques
    • - Describe the management of injured persons

    Prerequisites

    • - Hold a STCW PST certificate
    • - Fully complete the required Self-Declaration form to confirm you have maintained the required standard of competence by onboard training and experience
    • - During the practical element of this course you will be required to demonstrate the following: (Failure to complete the practical elements of the course will be deemed as a course failure. Should you have any injuries that you feel may prevent you from completing the practical elements of the course, it is advisable to rebook at a later date once you are fit and well).
      • - Correctly don a lifejacket
      • - Correctly don and use an immersion suit
      • - Jump from a height into the water 
      • - Swim while wearing a life jacket
      • - Right an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket
      • - Keep afloat without a life jacket
      • - Board a survival craft from the water while wearing a life jacket unassisted
    • - Hold a proficiency in Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting Certificate 
    • - During the practical element of this course you will be required to wear Self Contained Breathing Apparatus which weighs 18kg in realistic hot fire conditions and demonstrate casualty rescue with a dummy that weighs 35kg, and safe movement procedures utilising stairs and ladders. Failure to complete the practical elements of the course will be deemed as a course failure. Should you have any injuries that you feel may prevent you from completing the practical elements of the course, it is advisable to rebook at a later date once you are fit and well.
    • Hold a proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats) Certificate
    • NOTE: Due to the physically demanding nature of this course you will be required to complete a Fitness Declaration form on the day to make us aware of any medical issues, injuries or disabilities.  This form will be shared with the trainers for awareness. If you have any concerns regarding fitness please contact us to discuss further.

     

    Special Requirements

    Please remember to bring the following:

    • - Swimwear to be worn with underneath t-shirt and shorts. 
    • - Towel as showers are provided.

    Boiler suits & boots will be provided, but we recommend that you wear appropriate clothing underneath which will not suffer from the taint of smoke, thick socks are also advisable.  PPE will be provided. If you wear glasses you will need to remove these, therefore contact lenses are advisable. Please remove all jewellery. Lockers for personal effects are provided and showers are available if needed, but you will be required to bring your own towel.

    PPE will be provided. We recommend that you wear clothing suitable for waterborne exercises (i.e. warm layers) relevant to the prevailing conditions. For warmer weather it is recommended that bring with you some sunscreen.

    Assessments: Our assessments are now on an electronic format where you will need to scan a QR code. For this please bring with you an electronic device (example: mobile phone, iPad, tablet) that can scan the QR Code. Printed versions of the assessments are still available if required.
