Viking Maritime Group Supports Britannia Maritime Aid at COP26

Viking Maritime Group Chairman and Founder Dieter Jaenicke recently returned from COP26 – the 2021 United Nations climate change conference in Glasgow as a representative of Britannia Maritime Aid.

For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority.

World leaders arrived in Scotland for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference, alongside tens of thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses and citizens.

Dieter attended the event as a representative of the Britannia Maritime Aid, a registered charity which aims to deliver emergency aid and ocean advocacy, while also helping to train the next generation of British and Commonwealth seafarers.

The BMA intend to operate a British-built merchant ship, manned by UK and Commonwealth seafarers, which will operate as a disaster relief platform and a sea training vessel for cadets, apprentices, and non-seafaring trainees.

It will provide an effective and regular means of directly delivering UK overseas humanitarian aid and skills training on a year-round basis to UK overseas territories communities in need, and when required, to provide direct, fast and cost-effective emergency response to disaster hit islands and coastal commonwealth countries.

COP26 was an amazing opportunity for the BMA team, supported by the Viking Maritime Group to showcase the superb 1:100 scale model of the BMA ship.

The detailed model allowed them to demonstrate the unique characteristics of the World’s first dedicated HADR/Training Vessel and discuss how such ships could be built. The aim being, to effectively deploy the ships to Countries dealing with the increasing severe consequences of Climate change.

The Viking Maritime Group as a company were proud to be able to help facilitate the BMA’s presence at the event by supplying the backdrop and pop ups for the BMA stand.

COP26 was the ideal platform for the BMA team to discuss their plans with dignitaries such as HRH The Princess Royal and Kitack Lim, the IMO Secretary General, along with many leading figures in the UK Maritime Industry.

During the event, Dieter was also fortunate enough to be able to attend the COP26 International Maritime Hub, hosted by the City of Glasgow College in association with Maritime UK.

VMG Named as KEiBA Finalists

Viking Maritime Group is proud to have been selected as finalists in not one, but two categories in the prestigious Kent Excellence in Business Awards (KEiBA) this year.

KEiBA is an awards scheme staged and produced by the KM Media Group and Kent County Council to recognise and reward excellence in businesses in Kent and Medway.

It is such an honour for the VMG to have been recognised in both the “Success in International Trade” & “Family Business of the Year” categories. Both categories had extremely strong competition from other businesses and VMG are proud to be named alongside such prestigious businesses, such as Hornby, Shepherd Neame and GSE to name but a few.

It was a pleasure to welcome the KEiBA judges to our Dover office and showcase all we have to offer to the Maritime Industry, from our crew services to training to cadetships.

Making it to the final of the KEiBA awards in 2 categories is an accolade we as a team and a family are very proud of.

Congratulations to the Success in International Trade winners, Bigjigs Toys and the Family Business of the Year winners, Team HARD Racing Limited.

New 360 Tug Simulator at The Maritime Skills Academy in Portsmouth

The Maritime Skills Academy (part of the Viking Maritime Group) is further developing its training portfolio by expanding its state of the art simulation facilities at the Portsmouth centre.

The new addition will include a 360 degree full mission tug simulator at the Portsmouth centre, complete with Rolls Royce controls and electronics and genuine Damen hardware winch controls.

The intention is that this new simulator will be fully integrated with the existing full bridge simulator, to provide realistic exercises where tug operations can be combined with ship handling courses to further enhance the training opportunities.

Viking MSA’s model of providing an innovative and tailored approach to training has led to a significant increase in demand for simulator training from tug operators and ports alike.

Our fully integrated 360 tug simulator has realistic simulator visualisation and supports different types of training in:

  • Offshore tugging and towing
  • Ship assistance work
  • High speed escort work
  • Operating various anchor equipment
  • Oil rig and platform moves
  • Integrated tug master and pilot training

All types of tugboats are simulated, including conventional single-screw tugs, conventional twin-screw tugs, cycloid-drive (Voith-Schneider) tractor tugs and Z-drive reverse tractor drive.

Working in partnership with Seaways Global training courses can include:

  • Module 1 – ASD/ATD Tug Handling
  • Module 2 – Undertaking Harbour Towage
  • Module 3 – Active Escort & Dynamic Ship Assist
  • Pilot Azimuth Propulsion course
  • Effective Use of Tugs for Marine Pilots

The state-of-the-art tug simulator set up at Portsmouth includes:

  • 360° vision via 44 LED screens
  • 31 computers
  • Rolls Royce controls and electronics
  • ASD/ATD/CTS/VSP controls
  • Genuine Damen hardware winch controls.

Working closely in partnership with Wartsila, hydrodynamic modelling accurately replicates the dynamic interaction between the ship and the tug to further enhance the realism and user experience.

The MSA in Portsmouth already boasts a full 270 degree NACOS platinum bridge with integrated bridge wings, connected safety centre, engine simulation suite with its control room, main switch board, high voltage and 3x virtual machinery spaces.  See more here: https://www.maritimeskillsacademy.com/solent/
