Viking Maritime Group Named Finalists in KEiBA Awards 2021

The Viking Maritime Group were proud to have been selected as finalists in not one, but two categories in the prestigious Kent Excellence in Business KEiBA Awards 2021.

KEiBA is an awards scheme staged and produced by the KM Media Group and Kent County Council to recognise and reward excellence in businesses in Kent and Medway.

It is such an honour for the VMG to have been recognised in both the “Success in International Trade” & “Family Business of the Year” categories.

Both categories had extremely strong competition from other businesses and VMG are proud to be named alongside such prestigious businesses, such as Hornby, Shepherd Neame and GSE to name but a few.

It was a pleasure to welcome the KEiBA judges to our Dover office and showcase all we have to offer to the Maritime Industry, from our crew services to training to cadetships.

Making it to the final of the KEiBA awards in 2 categories is an accolade we as a team and a family are very proud of.

Congratulations to the Success in International Trade winners, Bigjigs Toys and the Family Business of the Year winners, Team HARD Racing Limited.

COVID Redundancy & Retraining Fund Extended Into 2022

The Maritime Charities Group (MCG) has extended the COVID Redundancy & Retraining Fund until March 31st 2022.

This is great news for seafarers that have found themselves out of employment due to the long term covid situation. A review was completed and found that still many seafarers have been affected and more help to UK seafarers is required. The scheme is administered by the Seafarers Society and much of the bursary comes from the Merchant Navy Welfare Board and Trinity House, alongside contributions from the Slater Fund.

COVID-19 Funding if you have been made redundant:

This funding is aimed at the UK Seafarers who have recently been made redundant due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This grant is offered to all seafarers of all ranks and departments who can demonstrate a planned route back into a maritime-related role. Each bursary is limited to a maximum of £500 per application and the applicants are able to select which training and/or qualifications they find will add value to their role.

Eligibility

Applicants must be British seafarers, resident in the UK, 18 years old and over, made redundant or notified of redundancy since March 2020. This includes those on short term contracts who have had a contract terminated or can demonstrate that you have been unemployed for three months or more prior to submitting an application. New Course at MSA – Shipboard Safety Officer (UK Chamber of Shipping Recognised Course)

Maritime Skills Academy is pleased to announce that the STCW Shipboard Safety Officer course has been added to our training portfolio and training sessions will be available from January 2022.

We are very proud to have also gained UK Chamber of Shipping course recognition.

Taught by our experienced and professional Instructors, this 3-day course is aimed at personnel and crew designated to take up the role of Safety Officer on board ships.

This course is suitable for seafarers who are already serving as either Safety Representatives or Safety Officers. It provides theoretical and practical training to allow you to undertake the duties of a Shipboard Safety Officer, as detailed by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The course addresses both accident prevention and accident investigation and covers the following areas.

  • Understand the relationship between the ISM code and safety management on board
  • Have an overview of the ISM code
  • Consider the causes of accidents
  • Understand the process and limitations of risk assessment
  • Consider the accident investigation process
  • Understand the importance of appropriate interviewing technique
  • Consider factors influencing the effectiveness of safety committee meetings

The UK Chamber of Shipping Course Recognition service is open to in-house or public courses delivered anywhere in the world. Through the scheme, they formally recognise training courses that are effective, quality assured and answer specific needs within the maritime industry.
