Remote Learning in the Maritime Industry

The Maritime Skills Academy is delighted to bring online STCW courses to our incredible course portfolio. We recently announced that we had gained approval from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to move ahead with some of our STCW training courses via webinar. We have started with a few of our more theory-based courses, so we have full confidence that our maritime trainees will be able to carry on with their learning in a way that is adapted to these unprecedented times.

We are a field that prides itself on hands-on, practical training- so remote online learning is a new horizon for us in the maritime industry. However, we believe that this will allow us to continue our training courses, and ensure that all seafarers achieve their training competence so that we can keep the maritime industry afloat. This is also a unique and exciting opportunity for trainees to experience a modern form of teaching, one that has many benefits for the students themselves. We believe that this experience will teach our trainees invaluable skills that will help them throughout their career, and be a considerable step forward for the maritime industry.

Control Over Your Learning

One of the most significant benefits of learning online is that you are given far more independence over how you learn- and at what pace. While the webinars will be scheduled; you can still learn at your own pace using online materials- quickly work through the material you understand well and take your time learning new skills so that you are performing tasks to the best of your ability.

This will teach you vital skills for the maritime profession, where you will need to be independent and confident in your own abilities to work efficiently on a vessel. You will also learn to manage your own time better and keep to schedules outside of a learning environment.

Flexibility and Innovation

Aboard a vessel, the crew need to be quick-thinking and able to adapt to problems, as well as new technology coming in. Being flexible and open to innovation is at the heart of working at sea. Unprecedented times such as these certainly require forward-thinking flexibility.

This new approach may seem daunting at first, but remote learning is simply a new challenge to be approached like any task working at sea.

Convenience

The most tangible benefit to remote learning is that it’s more convenient than on-site training. Through webinars, you still get to interact with a skilled teacher and are given all the material you need to complete your training from the comfort of your own home.

This means that you don’t need to commute, or stay anywhere, saving both time and money, so you can devote more attention to mastering maritime skills.

Ability to Revise

Working from home will help you schedule your time, and allow you to check your progress routinely- and then go back over anything you didn’t understand well. This means that your training will be more comprehensive and by the time you enter into maritime work, you will be well prepared and have all the skills you need.
