Description

The aim of the course is to provide seafarers the essential knowledge and training in Medical Care on Board Ship, particularly focusing on:

  • The ability to assess and provide care to an ill or injured person on board.
  • Understanding how to participate in the co-ordinated provision of medical care.
  • Having competence in carrying out basic medical procedures.
  • Using Radio Medical Advice for the management of ill or injured people on board.
  • Familiarisation with the equipment and medication available as per the MSN 1905 Ships Medical Stores list.

The course will include videos, group discussions, trainer led presentations, practice with a vast array of medical equipment, suturing, stitching and injections all reinforced with practical simulation exercises

This is an intensive course that will require a certain amount of self-study in the evenings.

Prerequisites

  • Hold an STCW Medical First Aid certificate
  • This course does require physical work that is carried out on the floor so anyone with injuries that prevent them from doing so will be unable to complete the course and will have to re-book once they are fit and well.

Certification

Delegates will be required to successfully complete a short assessment exercise in order to be issued with an MCA approved STCW Proficiency in Medical Care; Regulation VI/4, paragraph 2 and section A-VI/4, paragraphs 4 to 6 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended.
